Many business owners are having a difficult time with the huge change that has taken place in advertising. Just 5 years ago a phone book advertisement was a viable investment for a service-based business like an attorney.
In the past we would all wait for phone books to be dropped off on our doors, then they would take their place on the counter. After a few months, the phone books would show their useful wear. Then a change happened, slowly, throughout the years they started looking less worn and less worn as more and more people used them less and less.
Remember Ask Jeeves
What caused this change in phone book use? Two words, Search Engines. Remember Ask Jeeves, the computer butler who we used to ask questions? Then Yahoo became a major email player and right on the platform there was, and still is a search engine. However, now in 2017, namely, Google is king. Now, some would beg to differ which search engine is used more than others, but according to 2017 statistics from Search Engine Land, the statistics clearly show Google is the current powerhouse, with over 60% of all search queries.
Their stronghold has continued to gain strength year after year because of their mobile advancements in user experience. We have the maps helping us not only find what we are looking for, but then one click driving GPS directions, and a call feature all at the same place. On top of all that you can look to see what other people have experienced with the business, you are looking up.
Google is a beautiful organization. They have figured out how to bring the old-fashioned phone book into the new era, and they aren’t stopping anytime soon. Google is the answer to what has replaced phone books, but what do we as business owners do with that information? Well, in a perfect world you would want your business to be at the top of search results, but how? The answer is SEO, but then the question becomes how does my businesses SEO beat my competition? That is a hard question.

SEO is just one form of new advertising. I would never recommend putting all your marketing in one basket, but if you are doing anything at all, SEO needs to be at the top of your list. The reason? – your target client who is looking to spend money on your product or service at this very moment is using a search engine to find you right now. Will they find you, or your competition?
